Senior Legal Officer (Head, Development Law Service) In this role you lead the Development Law Service within FAO's Legal Office, guiding legal services that support national development and international cooperation in food and agriculture. You drive policy, research, capacity building, and regulatory reform across land, water, fisheries, environment, and nutrition, aligning with FAO's strategic framework. You will manage resources, mentor staff, and represent the Organization in multilateral forums. This is an opportunity to shape legal solutions for sustainable agrifood systems at scale.
Set goals for the Development Law Service aligned with FAO's Strategic Framework and Member priorities; oversee output quality and timely clearance of work.
Manage Service resources and finances; lead resource mobilization and guide personnel in implementing the work programme.
Ensure high-quality, clear, technically sound legal outputs in a timely manner.
Coordinate knowledge exchange on development law and service delivery modalities.
Foster innovation and use of new technologies to boost efficiency.
Identify legislative and other solutions to help Members address emerging challenges in food, agriculture and nutrition.
Prepare policy and position papers and internal/external reports on development law results.
Provide high-level advice to FAO managers, staff, and Members; supervise related work across FAO units.
Contribute to LEG management planning and evaluation; participate in organization-wide strategy.
Represent FAO in multilateral fora on development law and related issues; promote cross-unit collaboration.
Advanced university degree (Master's degree) in law; ten years of relevant legal experience in natural resources and development law in an international setting.
Working knowledge of English at proficiency level; intermediate knowledge of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
