As part of our Infrastructure team, you’ll contribute to a diverse portfolio of global projects delivering complex tunnel design within a truly multidisciplinary team to meet project requirements and produce innovative and sustainable solutions.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Tunnel designer for Global Infrastructure Projects to join our fast‑growing Tunnelling team in our Milan office. You will contribute to both local and international projects, including high‑speed rail and metro systems in the UK, Scandinavia, the Middle East, and California, as well as mining and energy‑infrastructure developments. The wide variety of project work, combined with internal research opportunities, provides an excellent environment to further develop technical skills in both mechanised and traditional tunnelling, and to support the successful delivery of complex infrastructure projects.
As a Tunnel Engineer At Arup,



You Will
- Take ownership of design packages
- Working directly with clients and other professionals with minimal supervision
- Co-ordinating work with engineers of other disciplines
- Producing project related correspondence and reports
- Providing design calculations and supporting preparation and review of deliverables

About
We’re looking for a Tunnel Engineer who is passionate about challenging design problems and with an interest in innovation and optimisation. We also value:
- BEng in Civil Engineering or a BSc in Geological Sciences supplemented by an MSc in Engineering Geology/Geotechnical Engineering/Soil Mechanics or Structural Engineering;
- Working knowledge of industry standard software for tunnelling, geotechnical and structural design;
- Up to 5 years geotechnical and tunnelling design experience in a consultancy environment;
- Able to demonstrate
