This house was designed for a couple who decided to leave their urban Winnipeg home to retreat to the openness and serenity of the Manitoba prairie landscape. The house is located on 600 acres (65 ha.) of farm land and woodlot north of Beausejour, MB. This abandoned site had naturalized to native Manitoba Prairie species over the past several decades.

The residence features a long, one-storey volume with an attached two-car garage and workshop. The open plan program pushes in and out along a full length hallway, arranging framed views of the prairie landscape throughout all areas of the home. Two offices and a master bedroom flank both sides of a generous central area consisting of the living room, dining area and kitchen.

A large expanse of south facing glazing maximizes the amount of natural light entering the house. Roof framing includes clear spans for the full building depth and features a 7’-0” (2.1 m.) deep cantilevered roof overhang to provide natural shading. The house is responsive to its setting and to the constant seasonal changes of the prairie landscape.

Natural materials, in both rough and polished finishes,



help to achieve this. These include dark stained vertical cedar siding, horizontal pedra rainscreen accents, quarter sawn white oak flooring, polished concrete, ceramic tile and natural granite. Detailing of these materials is integral to the linear geometry of the design.

The framing plan and connection details are simple and suggestive of a rural vernacular. Passive design strategies include natural daylighting, solar shading and cross-air ventilation through operable windows on both sides of the house. A geothermal system, with a ground heat to air exchanger, provides an energy efficient and environmentally clean heating and cooling system for the house within a thermally efficient building envelope.
