The project’s aim was to design a contemporary family home for a couple and their young children relocating from the city to their rural family estate. The design responds to issues of privacy, views, and existing family structures while emphasizing connection, warmth, and functionality. The entry, recessed into the long façade, aligns visually with the vehicular approach, creating a sense of welcome and orientation.
Guests are guided through a sheltered threshold clad in Douglas fir into a double-height space filled with daylight from expansive windows. The layout centers on the kitchen as the daily and social hub, linking entry, living, dining, and an indoor pool. A discreet pantry provides hidden efficiency, ensuring seamless transitions between intimate routines and larger gatherings.
A partial second floor incorporates a bridge-like walkway overlooking the entry and living spaces, enhancing openness and interaction. Materiality reinforces both function and character, with extensive use of natural wood—Douglas fir and white oak—providing structural continuity and warmth. Exposed steel,
weathered Corten, and crafted detailing balance rugged rural honesty with modern refinement.
Subtle design gestures, such as concealed storage, flush baseboards, and hidden doors, maintain a clean, poetic interior language. Overall, the home expresses a contemporary design rooted in rural spirit. It balances durability, practicality, and aesthetics, embodying welcome and warmth through natural materials.
The result is a dwelling equally suited to everyday family life and large-scale hosting, offering both intimacy and grandeur within a cohesive architectural vision.
