About Kirby Group Engineering Kirby Group Engineering is an international multi-disciplinary engineering services contractor and leading provider of high-value engineering services to a number of âblue chipâ companies. Operating across Ireland, the UK, Europe and South Africa, Kirby has become the engineering service provider of choice in growth segments such as pharmaceuticals, data centres and power transmission and distribution. Our culture is innovative, collaborative and performance focused. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow and develop in a company committed to developing talent and rewarding performance. Project Engineer â Mechanical Location: Onâsite â Milan Letâs be honest: data centres donât build themselves. And they definitely donât coordinate themselves. Thatâs where you come in. Weâre Kirby â we deliver large, technically complex projects across Europe. Right now, weâre expanding our data centre delivery team and looking for a Project Engineer (Mechanical) who can translate design intent into realâworld installation without needing a small army or divine intervention. If you like making things work, solving problems early, and making sure the project isnât derailed by âthat drawing nobody checkedâ⌠then read on.
What Youâll Actually Be Doing Youâll be responsible for the dayâtoâday mechanical engineering activities on a major construction project. Some of it is coordination, some of it is investigative, and some of it is stopping avoidable issues from becoming expensive ones. Your Role Includes
- Pulling together design documents and drawings so the team isnât building from memory.
- Joining handover meetings â the moment where hopes, dreams, and actual scope collide.
- Identifying valueâengineering opportunities that reduce cost without reducing quality.
- Preparing coordinated drawings across mechanical, electrical, sprinkler, architectural, and structural disciplines.
- Reviewing design specs, technical submittals, and drawings to make sure theyâre compliant and buildable.
- Supporting weekly progress reports (the ones people actually read).
- Raising and tracking purchase orders, equipment deliveries, and receipts.
- Using RFIs to clarify anything vague, contradictory, or suspiciously optimistic in the design.
- Keeping an eye on project commercials: variations, takeâoffs, profit plans â because engineering doesnât happen in a vacuum.
- Working closely with designers, contractors, and your own project team to resolve technical and commercial issues early.
- Attending technical meetings and, occasionally, mediating them.
- Managing document control using File Key â yes, it matters.
- Preparing method statements and risk assessments that are accurate and actually reflect whatâs happening on site.
- Coordinating subcontractors so everyone installs the right thing in the right place at the right time.
- Carrying out inspections, snagging, and P&ID;/layout walkdowns.
- Populating and tracking test packs like the project depends on it (because it does).
- Protecting sensitive information and complying fully with Kirbyâs ISMS.
Who Thrives in This Role Youâll fit right in if you:
- Understand the dance between design, procurement, and installation.
- Enjoy problemâsolving more than problemâobserving.
- Communicate well with everyone â from BIM modellers to site crews to commercial teams.
- Prefer a bit of structure but can handle the dynamic chaos of a live construction project.
- Want to build a career delivering some of the most complex data centre projects in Europe.
Why Kirby? Weâre large enough to build some of the biggest and most demanding missionâcritical facilities in Europe â but small enough that your work actually matters, your voice is heard, and your development is intentional. Youâll work with people who are skilled, collaborative, and grounded â no egos, no nonsense. Special consideration will be given to candidates belonging to protected categories under L. 68â99 For more information on this role, or other Construction / Engineering opportunities across Ireland, the UK, Europe, or South Africa please review our careers page (Vacancies â Kirby Group Careers) or contact the Talent Acquisition Team at Kirby Group in confidence on +353 (0) . Kirby Group Engineering is an equal opportunities employer. We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates, regardless of race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or age.
