The Doctorate in Research and Studies on Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Renaissance Humanism, Salerno (RAMUS) is designed as a course of study of the highest calibre for young scholars interested in research and the promotion of integrated, multifunctional and multidisciplinary knowledge across various academic fields, spanning a historical period that includes Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: Language and Literature, Philology, History, Palaeography, Papyrology, Religions, Archaeology, Philosophy and the History of Philosophy. Its primary objective is to provide comprehensive training in scientific research within these fields of study, achieved through the integration of studies covering all the disciplines and methods necessary for the preservation of this heritage (languages, literature, history, philosophy, archaeology) and its cultural legacy in the contemporary world.

The RAMUS PhD course is inter-departmental as it is based in two Departments of the University of Salerno: the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences (DiSPaC) and the Department of Humanities (DIPSUM).



The interdepartmental nature of the Doctorate is an opportunity for a synergic increase in the quality of the teaching project and the range of training activities made available to doctoral students and contributing to increasing the attractiveness of the institution, nationally and internationally. The organisation of teaching in modules of three days a month for eleven months a year, successfully tested by both previous doctorates and enabled through the use of teaching facilities made available by the two departments, encourages the participation of doctoral students interested in the training courses offered in such an organic and coordinated form only by the University of Salerno.

Monthly net income of PhD scholarship (max 36 months) is 1195 EUR .

Additional income may arise from optional teaching assistance activities.

The scholarship reserved for graduates in foreign Universities includes a vantaggi package with free accommodation (for the October-July period) in the students' dormitories and one free daily meal at the canteen in the University’s Campus.

Selection process

Evaluation of academic, scientific and professional curriculum; degree mark; letter(s) of presentation by scholars from universities
different than that of the candidates; publications and other documented scientific titles.

Evaluation of the research project.

Interview on September 15, 2026: Part 1: translation of a Greek or Latin text OR interpretation and contextualisation of a historical Greek or Latin text or a medieval text, depending on the subject; Part 2: commentary on the text translated in the first part

Interview on September 22, 2026: 1. Questions on topics of interest in the curriculum; 2. Presentation and discussion of individual research project proposal; 3. Assessment of the candidate’s knowledge of Greek or Latin, in reference to the research project submitted by the candidate; 4.Test of knowledge of at least one of the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish; foreign candidates must also prove their mastery of the Italian language.
