Pointing Systems Engineer
Location: Turin, Italy
Full-Time
Salary Range: €30,000 - €50,000
Join ORiS and help build the future of energy in space.
At ORiS, we are building the technologies that will power the next generation of space missions. Through laser-based wireless power transmission, we aim to overcome the energy limitations of today’s satellites and enable longer, more capable, and more resilient operations in orbit.
We are looking for a Pointing Systems Engineer to develop the precision motion and control systems used to direct and stabilize ORiS laser transmission units.
You will work on both spaceborne and ground-based pointing architectures: from fine-pointing mechanisms designed to accurately direct a laser beam toward a target satellite, to the electromechanical tracking platform used by LOONA to follow and recharge drones in flight.
The role combines mechanism design, actuator and sensor integration, control algorithms, simulation, prototyping, and experimental validation. You will work closely with the Optical, GNC, Electronics, Software, and Systems Engineering teams to translate pointing requirements into reliable hardware and control solutions.
What You Will Do
- Design and develop precision pointing and tracking mechanisms for spaceborne and ground-based laser transmission systems.
- Develop and validate control algorithms for coarse, intermediate, and fine pointing stages.
- Work on the LOONA electromechanical platform, including azimuth and elevation motion, target tracking, stabilization, and actuator control.
- Select and integrate motors, encoders, actuators, bearings, sensors, and drive electronics.
- Model system kinematics, dynamics, disturbances, structural flexibility, and pointing performance using MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent tools.
- Develop software in Python and C++ for control, testing, simulation, and hardware integration.
- Define pointing budgets, system requirements, interfaces, and verification procedures.
- Support prototyping, laboratory testing, field trials, hardware-in-the-loop validation, and system-level integration.
- Collaborate with Optical, GNC, Software, Electronics, Mechanical, and Systems Engineering teams.
What We Are Looking For
- MSc or PhD in Mechatronics, Robotics, Aerospace, Mechanical, Control, or Automation Engineering.
- Experience in mechatronic systems, precision mechanisms, motion control, or pointing systems.
- Strong knowledge of kinematics, dynamics, control systems, actuators, sensors, and feedback loops.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and proficiency in Python or C++.
- Familiarity with motors, encoders, motor drivers, embedded controllers, and electromechanical integration.
- Experience developing and testing real hardware, from early prototypes to integrated systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Professional proficiency in English.
Nice to Have
- Experience with spacecraft pointing systems, optical terminals, telescopes, gimbals, or precision tracking platforms.
- Knowledge of GNC, line-of-sight stabilization, disturbance rejection, and pointing-error budgets.
- Experience with brushless motors, piezoelectric actuators, fast steering mirrors, or multi-stage pointing architectures.
- Familiarity with real-time control, embedded systems, ROS/ROS2, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
- Experience with structural dynamics, vibration analysis, or control-structure interaction.
- Familiarity with ECSS standards and space qualification processes.
Why ORiS
- Work on innovative satellite missions and advanced space technologies.
- Play a key role in shaping system-level decisions that directly impact mission success.
- Collaborate with highly skilled engineers across multiple technical disciplines.
- Gain exposure to cutting-edge space programs and emerging technologies.
- Grow professionally within a fast-growing and ambitious space company.
- Be part of a culture driven by innovation, ownership, and technical excellence.
Our Offer
- Salary Range: €30,000 – €50,000 (depending on experience)
- EUR 1,000 per year in fringe benefits
- EUR 8 meal vouchers per working day
- Flexible lavoro da remoto arrangements, subject to project needs
- Stock option plan
