Going down the steps on Saqqajja Hill in Rabat, you immediately come upon Scala restaurant on one of Malta’s loveliest terraces. The magnificent view of abundant greenery right beneath you is a joy in itself. In the evening the place is magically lit and the few outdoor tables that Scala offers are worth their space in pure gold.
Scala’s beautiful al fresco setting is complemented inside by a design which is beautifully functional and stylishly contemporary. The seating is aesthetically striking yet most comfortable. The lighting is pleasing, and the few art pieces displayed do not overwhelm the entire aesthetic.
A slab of marble, the wine corner hosting an extensive selection, and an unused but artistically rendered staircase are some notable visual features at Scala.
The food at Scala is just what the menu-brochure promises: a journey into a higher level. The service is impeccable and friendly, never stiff. The cuisine is Mediterranean with a refined, classical touch.
The fare at Scala is delightful with sublime tastes and presented splendidly. The menu is not extensive but all dishes vie for top place. A parmesan tart in the snack section is delightful. The linguine ‘Gentile selection’ with mussels and bottarga is beyond impressive in texture and tastiness.
For mains what stands out is the local braised pork neck cooked to perfection.
Scala is a sensation in all sensory ways.
