What This Trial Is About

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia BPD is a common and serious complication affecting about 40 of infants born before 28 weeks of gestation. It causes long-term breathing, heart, and developmental problems. Diagnosing BPD currently depends on respiratory support needed at 36 weeks postmenstrual age, which limits early treatment options. Lung ultrasound LUS is a safe, bedside imaging method that measures lung aeration and may help predict BPD earlier by assessing lung changes in preterm infants.

This study observes preterm infants born before 32 weeks gestational age using lung ultrasound at 7 and 14 days of life. Experienced physicians will examine six chest areas to calculate the Lung Ultrasound Score and assess pleural line abnormalities like thickening or irregularities. The goal is to evaluate if early lung ultrasound findings can predict BPD development, applying two common BPD definitions to compare diagnostic accuracy. Participants will undergo lung ultrasounds twice during their first two weeks of life. Researchers will collect data on lung aeration scores, pleural changes, duration of mechanical ventilation, and oxygen therapy. The main outcomes include the ability of lung ultrasound to predict BPD and moderate-to-severe BPD at these early time points. The study aims to improve early risk identification to support timely interventions, with involvement lasting through the neonatal period until BPD diagn
