General Legal Affairs Specialist – FAO

Tempo pieno, on site or home based, the position is based in Rome, Italy, or at the applicant's home location.
The assignment will last up to 11 months on a when?actually?employed basis, under the overall guidance of the Legal Counsel and Deputy Legal Counsel, and direct supervision of the Senior Legal Officer (LEGA).
Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on FAO operations in line with FAO regulations, UN system law, and the Organization's status as a specialized agency of the United Nations.
Support headquarters units and FAO Decentralised Offices on instruments such as contribution agreements, project agreements, procurement contracts, intellectual property matters, memoranda of understanding and other cooperation instruments.
Assist in negotiating, drafting and interpreting host?country agreements, privileges and immunities for FAO decentralized offices.
Represent FAO in judicial proceedings and dispute settlements, including appeals before administrative tribunals.
Provide legal support to governing and statutory bodies, drafting legislative and procedural texts and advising on matter interpretations.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree in law, or first?level law degree plus at least two (2) years of relevant experience and a professional qualification to practice law.




Between one to ten years of relevant legal experience (minimum one year for Category C, five years for Category B, ten years for Category A) in public international law, law of international organisations, international administrative law, and contract law.
Working knowledge of English (level C) and knowledge of at least one FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is desirable.
Experience with UN system or inter?governmental organisations and in drafting and negotiating contribution agreements, private?sector partnership agreements and digital?innovation instruments.
Strong legal research and writing skills, capacity to prepare clear reports, legal opinions, pleadings and other formal correspondence, and ability to support FAO in at least two official languages.
