Institute for Alpine Environment

The Institute for Alpine Environment conducts problem-oriented research on mountain ecosystems, with a focus on landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and sustainable development. The Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol (BMS) is a long-term biodiversity monitoring program that provides essential scientific knowledge to support evidence-based decision-making in spatial planning, agriculture, and nature conservation. The program surveys plant and animal groups that are particularly sensitive to climate and land-use change across 320 terrestrial sampling sites distributed throughout South Tyrol (7 400 km²), representing the region's broad diversity of habitats. Bird communities are monitored using standardized point counts complemented by passive acoustic recording devices. Further information is available at biodiversity.eurac.edu. In addition to BMS, the Institute is actively involved in several national and international research projects on passive acoustic monitoring of birds.



To support the Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol (BMS) program and related bird research projects, we are seeking a Junior Researcher to contribute to bird monitoring activities, including both expert-based field surveys and automated bioacoustic monitoring, as well as data management and database organization. The successful candidate will have experience in bird identification through visual observations and vocalizations, as well as familiarity with passive acoustic monitoring techniques and bioacoustics recording devices. The position combines extensive fieldwork with data processing and analysis, offering the opportunity to work across a wide range of Alpine habitats.

Field surveys will take place throughout the Province of South Tyrol, Italy, from valley floors to high alpine environments. Intensive fieldwork is expected between April and July, including surveys at high elevations, while the period from autumn to spring
