The Mechanical Engineering Group provides innovative design solutions for advanced technology prototypes. Example projects include laser communication, high-energy lasers, optical sensors, biological agent detectors, and large radar antennas, for systems deployed on ground, maritime, air‐ and space‐borne platforms. The group has expertise in precision engineering, opto‐mechanics, mechanisms, electronics packaging, large structures, highly efficient lightweight structures, composite materials and additive manufacturing. The group is the Engineering Division’s center for 3D CAD design and data management and is involved in every step of program execution from conceptual design to system integration and test.

Position Description

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide support for the mechanical design, analysis and testing of complex mechanical, opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Responsibilities will include design, analyses, integration,



and testing of complex hardware from conceptual design through fabrication and field performance evaluation. The candidate must have demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals with a strong academic background and be capable of taking on a broad range of challenging problems involving structures, mechanisms, thermal systems, optics and electronics. The successful candidate will be expected to present the design concepts to both internal and external audiences. This position involves working in close-knit teams with design, analyses and test personnel. The position may involve travel to meetings and field sites.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals with strong academic background.

Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate good written and oral communication skills and require little or no supervision.
