We’re looking for a Firmware & Hardware Developer to manage the IoT devices we deploy in the field: acoustic sensors, environmental monitoring stations, and devices for analyzing beehives and habitats. This is a dual-purpose role, with equal weight between embedded firmware and electronic design, and responsibility spanning the entire product lifecycle: from conception to design, from prototyping to industrialization, and even maintenance and development of installed devices . You won’t be overseeing a single piece of the process, but the product as a whole—in a context where reliability is as important as innovation.

What will you do?

Product ideation and definition

You will contribute to the definition of new devices, starting from monitoring needs: translating scientific and product requirements into technical specifications, evaluating viable technological solutions, feasibility analyses, and cost estimates. You will be involved in architectural decisions from the outset, not after decisions have already been made.

Firmware development

You will design and develop firmware for IoT devices on low-power microcontrollers, writing embedded code in C/C++ and integrating drivers for sensors and peripherals. You will manage device communication to the cloud using the most suitable wireless protocols for each application (LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, BLE, Wi‑Fi) and implement remote firmware update mechanisms (OTA), essential for a distributed fleet. You will continuously work on optimizing energy consumption, from managing sleep states to sizing battery and solar power profiles.

Hardware design

You will oversee the electronic design of devices: architecture definition, component selection, schematic design, and PCB layout, with a focus on manufacturing and testability (DFM/DFT) requirements. You will handle signal conditioning for analog and digital sensors and the integration of power subsystems. You will oversee the prototyping, board bring‑up, and hardware debugging phases, collaborating with external suppliers for prototype and first‑run production.

Testing, validation and debugging in the field

You’ll define and conduct functional, reliability, and environmental tests on devices,

both in the lab and under real‑world installation conditions. You’ll analyze malfunctions detected in the field, tracing their root cause—firmware, hardware, or integration—and implement the necessary fixes. You’ll help build repeatable test tools and procedures, so that validation grows with the product.

Product certifications and compliance

You will follow the device certification processes (CE marking, RED directive, electromagnetic compatibility), preparing the necessary technical documentation and liaising with external laboratories for conformity testing.

Maintenance and evolution of the installed fleet

You’ll manage the device lifecycle, even after it’s launched: monitoring the health of the fleet, managing firmware revisions, analyzing recurring faults, and defining corrective actions or necessary hardware revisions. You’ll provide technical support to colleagues, collaborators, and customers on products already in the field, and will use the collected data to improve subsequent generations.

Collaboration and documentation

You’ll work closely with the software and data team to ensure consistency between field data and the platform, and with the operations team for industrialization and post‑sales support. You’ll keep firmware and hardware technical documentation up to date.

What are we looking for?

- Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering or similar courses
- Approximately 5 years of experience in embedded firmware development and electronic design, also gained on products outside our sector
- Solid command of C/C++ in the embedded field, with experience on low‑power microcontrollers (e.g. STM32, nRF, ESP32 or equivalent families)
- Ability to read and draw schematics and create PCB layouts with EDA tools (Altium, KiCad or equivalent)

- Experience with embedded communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART) and with at least one wireless technology for IoT
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment: oscilloscope, logic analyzer, multimeter, benchtop power supplies
- Using version control systems (Git) and a structured approach to code management
- Good knowledge of technical English, for documentation and relations with suppliers
- Availability to travel to the Como office for laboratory activities

Nice to have

- Experience with devices intended for outdoor installations or in hostile environments (IP protection rating, temperature variations, humidity)
- Experience in end‑to‑end management of an electronic product, from conception to series production
- Knowledge of RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) or structured embedded frameworks
- Previous experience in completing CE/RED certification courses
- Familiarity with photovoltaic power systems and charge management
- Understanding cloud integration and IoT application protocols (MQTT, CoAP)
- Experience with automated test pipelines or CIs applied to firmware
- Interest in environmental sensing, acoustics, or bioacoustics

Soft skills

We’re looking for someone with strong problem‑solving skills, capable of navigating different levels of abstraction—from microcontroller registers to the behavior of devices installed in an orchard. Precision and attention to detail, because a design error across a distributed fleet can be costly. A clear vision and a sense of ownership over the product throughout its lifecycle are essential. Independent management of priorities and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, communicating effectively even with those without an electronics background.

What we offer

- Permanent contract, tempo pieno
- Indicative RAL: €35,000 – €45,000 commensurate with actual experience
- Hybrid working method, based in Milan; travel to the Como office is planned for laboratory activities, prototyping and device testing
- A role with direct and measurable impact on products that generate real environmental value
- A young, multidisciplinary and passionate team
- Growth and continuous training paths
