Offer Description

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is a private research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. Each research area is assigned to a specific research Centre, of which there are twelve totals. Information regarding the research Centres, their activities and production are available at .

In particular, the FBK Centre for Sensors and Devices (FBK-SD) ( ) is an applied research centre that operates in the following scientific and technological areas: quantum technologies, detectors, microsystems and integrated systems. The FBK-SD has extremely advanced technical knowhow in innovative devices design and fabrication technologies as well as in the system integration. The strategic mission of the FBK-SD is scientific excellence combined with the ability to exploit research results. The innovation model is open to collaboration in national and international expertise networks.

Workplace Description

The candidate will be working in theIntegrated and Quantum Optics (I&QO;) unit of FBK-SD. I&QO; develops, fabricates and characterizes integrated optical circuits realized on different material platforms operating in the visible NIR spectral region. The principal application fields for the integrated optical circuits are biomedical sensing, miniaturization of spectrometers and interferometers,

optical navigation systems, and devices for applications in telecommunications among others. I&QO; develops also integrated photonic circuits for experiments in the context of quantum simulation. The integrated optical circuits are designed and fabricated by FBK, within the cleanrooms of the center of SandD. More information about I&QO; is available at:

Background information and description of research projects

This position is offeredwithin the IPCEI ME/CT project. In the IPCEI ME/CT project, FBK intends to significantly expand and improve its manufacturing and integration facilities to achieve high-level and reliable heterogeneous production capabilities to maximise research and competitiveness in the market. In IPCEI ME 1, FBK is mainly working on the integration of new materials (Silicon Carbide & Germanium-on-Silicon) and hetero-integration to extend the capabilities of already established silicon platforms for different classes of devices.

Job Description

FBK-SD is looking for a dynamic, highly motivated, and independent researcher in the field of integrated photonic devices to strengthen the team. Integrated photonic devices and platforms are built for applications in sensing, telecommunications, and quantum technologies.

The research activity will focus on the development of integrated photonic circuits and their characterization. Depending on the skills of the candidate and our current needs, the activity could cover the complete R&D; cycle, from the conception of new technological solutions and the development of new platforms to the improvement of existing ones. These include device design through simulation,

the development of fabrication steps or fabrication sequences in a cleanroom environment, electro-optical characterization of integrated photonic circuits, and eventually the set-up of measurement routines on new equipment. The work will be performed in close collaboration with other device and process scientists. The selected candidate will become a key member of the team working on ongoing projects and future developments, actively participating in dissemination and networking activities.
