We are looking for an experienced Data Scientist to join an international and multicultural environment supporting scientific and policy-oriented projects related to the European forest-based sector. The successful candidate will contribute to the collection, management, analysis, and visualization of complex datasets, while developing analytical workflows, databases, and data-driven solutions that support strategic decision-making and scientific research.

This role requires a strong background in data science, GIS technologies, forest-based sector data analysis, and quantitative modelling, combined with excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

- Analyse, validate, and cross-compare European, international, national, regional, and local datasets related to wood resources and wood-based products.
- Design, develop, and maintain analytical databases supporting forest-based sector research and assessments.
- Collect, clean, structure, and prepare data from heterogeneous sources, ensuring data quality and consistency.
- Develop and maintain annual Wood Resource Balance Sheets at EU and Member State level.
- Create and maintain static and web-based Sankey diagrams representing woody biomass flows, including automation scripts and update processes.




- Perform statistical and quantitative analyses to support scientific studies and policy-related initiatives.
- Produce data visualisations, graphs, charts, infographics, and other communication materials to present analytical findings.
- Develop and maintain software tools and reproducible analytical workflows supporting scientific projects.
- Collaborate with external stakeholders, including industry representatives, academic institutions, and SMEs, to collect data and define analytical requirements.
- Prepare technical documentation, reports, training materials, workshop content, and contributions to scientific publications.
- Present methodologies, results, and limitations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams in a multilingual and international environment.

What We Are Looking For (Requirements):

Required Qualifications

- University degree corresponding to EQF Level 7 (Master's degree or equivalent).
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in IT and data-related roles.
- Very good command of English and Italian (minimum B2 level or equivalent), both written and spoken.

Technical Expertise

- Minimum 5 years of experience with Python.
- Minimum 5 years of experience with PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
- Minimum 10 years of experience working with GIS technologies and tools.
- Minimum 5 years of experience using e!Sankey.
- Minimum 5 years of experience using MATLAB or Octave.




- Strong knowledge of ArcGIS, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and e!Sankey.
- Extensive experience managing, cleaning, and structuring forest-based sector datasets.
- Experience working with woody biomass supply and demand flows and wood processing industry technical coefficients.
- Knowledge of programming languages commonly used in data science, such as Python, R, and SQL.
- Experience designing and implementing data-driven analytical solutions.
- Knowledge of data preparation, transformation, and reproducible dataset creation.
- Experience with analytical data storage and querying technologies.
- Strong data visualisation capabilities and experience communicating analytical insights.
- Knowledge of version control and software development best practices, including Git.
- Experience with Material Flow Analysis methodologies and related visualisation tools
