The project investigates liquid crystals and ferronematic materials through variational and asymptotic methods. The research has four objectives: 1) **Smectic thin films**: analysis of a free-boundary problem for epitaxial growth and of the nematic-smectic phase transition using convergence techniques. 2) **Ferronematics**: characterization of minimizers of nonlocal energies in the highly dilute regime, to describe topological defects, line singularities and their evolution through gradient flows. 3) **Nonlocal coupling**: study of the nonlinear interaction between the director field and electric fields in the Oseen-Frank model, using duality theory to obtain a variational formulation and rigorously justify local energy approximations. 4) **Magnetic domain walls**:
analysis of transition layers induced by an external field and of the Modica-Mortola-type variational limit, including the pinning of domain walls at singularities of the nematic field.
