The American University of Rome (AUR) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in Art History, beginning in Fall 2027.

AUR's BA in Art History combines the critical, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches of an American liberal arts education with exceptional opportunities for direct engagement with art, architecture, museums, collections, archives, and cultural institutions throughout Rome.

We seek an accomplished scholar-teacher whose research and teaching will expand the intellectual, methodological, and geographic scope of the Art History program. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth and visibility of the program, maintain an active scholarly agenda, and demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, mentorship, and academic citizenship.

Preferred areas of specialization include early modern, modern, and contemporary art; global art history; museum and curatorial studies; collecting, provenance, and the art market; visual and material culture; and architectural history. We also welcome candidates whose teaching and research build productive connections between Art History and Fine Arts, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture and encouraging collaboration across programs, museums, collections, and other cultural institutions. Candidates should be prepared to teach foundational Art History courses as well as upper-level courses in their areas of expertise.

Located in Rome, AUR offers exceptional opportunities for object-based, site-specific, and experiential teaching through engagement with museums, collections, archives, galleries, monuments, archaeological sites, and contemporary cultural institutions. The successful candidate will be encouraged to integrate these resources into both teaching and research.

Requirements

- Ph.D.



in Art History or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentorship.
- Active record of scholarly research and publication appropriate to career stage.
- Ability to teach foundational Art History courses as well as advanced courses in the candidate's area of specialization.
- Commitment to interdisciplinary teaching, active learning, and student-centered pedagogy.
- Excellent written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with museum-based, object-based, archival, or site-based teaching and research.
- Experience in an American liberal arts and/or international university environment.
- Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration across Art History, Fine Arts, and related fields.
- Demonstrated engagement with museums, collections, archives, galleries, or other cultural institutions.
- Experience with curriculum development, academic administration, program leadership, or strategic planning.

Responsibilities

- Teach courses across the Art History curriculum.
- Maintain an active scholarly and professional research agenda.
- Advise and mentor students in their academic, professional, and scholarly development.
- Contribute to curriculum development, assessment, strategic planning, and program growth.
- Participate in university service and faculty governance.
- Contribute to the intellectual life and visibility of the Art History program through lectures, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, publications,



and collaborations with cultural institutions.
- Depending on rank, experience, and institutional needs, contribute to academic leadership and program administration, including potential future service as Program Director.
