MODALITA' DI CANDIDATURA: saranno accettate solo le candidature ricevute tramite il nostro sito web www.niulinx.ai/it/careers
The context
Niulinx is a deeptech spin-off of Politecnico di Milano building L4 autonomous driving systems for the next generation of European mobility. We're developing autonomous mobility services with a regulatory-first approach, partnering with local operators through a franchise model to bring safe, scalable mobility solutions to cities across Europe. We are going from 0 to 1 on organisation, and we plan to reach around 100 engineers by the end of 2026.
Key responsibilities
- Own the mechanical architecture of perception and compute hardware integration (LiDAR, cameras, radar, GNSS/IMU, compute units): define packaging strategy, mounting concepts, and interface standards.
- Design production-intent mounts, brackets, enclosures, and housings with full attention to structural integrity, sealing, thermal management, and manufacturability.
- Lead the mechanical integration of hardware onto the vehicle: roof rigs, interior mounts, cable routing, and structural interfaces, including load cases and vibration considerations.
- Drive rapid prototyping (in-house 3D printing and external machining) and define the path to series-representative parts, selecting appropriate processes and materials.
- Own the release process: technical drawings with correct GD&T;, BOMs, assembly instructions, and revision-controlled design data (PDM/PLM discipline).
- Lead packaging and integration trade-offs with hardware, electronics, and systems engineering, balancing performance, cost, weight, and serviceability.
- Manage supplier and machine-shop relationships: component sourcing, DFM reviews, tolerance negotiation, and quality acceptance.
- Define validation plans, then test-fit, instrument, and validate prototypes on real vehicles, and drive design iterations to closure.
- Establish design guidelines, standards, and best practices for the growing department, and mentor junior designers.
Indicative profile
- Mechanical design engineer (typically 2+ years, but strong junior profiles welcome) with a demonstrable track record of taking mechanical assemblies from concept to physical, validated hardware. Relevant hands-on project experience — including university competition teams such as Formula SAE, MotoStudent, or similar — is fully valued alongside professional experience.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field preferred; equivalent demonstrable experience will be considered.
- Autonomous, hands-on, and rigorous, comfortable owning ambiguity in an early-stage environment and setting structure where none exists.
- Solid professional English required (regular contact with European partners and suppliers).
Must have skills
- Expert CAD/CAM proficiency: parametric 3D modeling and complex assembly management (Fusion 360), plus practical CAM/toolpath knowledge for machined parts.
- Industrial manufacturing competence: design for manufacturing across CNC machining, sheet metal, and molding/forming processes, with sound material selection and cost/quality awareness.
- Functional design (progettazione funzionale): ability to translate requirements into functionally correct mechanical assemblies — defining load paths, kinematics, interfaces, tolerances, and validation criteria rather than just producing geometry.
- Strong command of GD&T; and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Sealing and ingress protection: gasketed, IP-rated enclosure design.
- Thermal management for sensor and high-power compute enclosures.
- Structural design fundamentals: load paths, fastening, vibration/NVH awareness; FEA literacy for sizing and validation.
- Cable routing, connector selection, and solid electromechanical integration literacy.
Nice to have skills
- Additive manufacturing expertise: process selection, DfAM (design for additive manufacturing), and material behavior across FDM/SLS/SLA and metal AM.
- Topology optimization and lightweighting (generative design workflows).
- Surface/freeform modeling (T-splines in Fusion, or Class-A exposure).
- Proficiency in a second CAD tool (SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX) and PDM/PLM experience.
- 3D scanning and reverse engineering.
- Exposure to automotive standards and homologation constraints, or ISO 26262 / functional-safety-adjacent mechanical work.
- Experience mounting sensors on vehicles or mobile robots.
We want people who
- Use data and evidence before forming an opinion;
- Can distinguish correlation from causation;
- Can say “I don’t know — let me check”;
- Move well in complex, evolving contexts;
- Understand the dynamics between people, teams and organisations;
- Have interests and curiosity that extend beyond their studies or work.
