The Team

The Sexual Assault Medical Service is a specialised service of both doctors and nurses within the Department of Health’s Women’s & Children’s Service, supporting adult and paediatric clients affected by sexual assault and family violence.

The team works as part of the broader Tasmanian health system to provide safe, accessible, culturally respectful and evidence-based care to vulnerable people. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, clinical leadership, education, quality improvement and strong links with community and justice services, the team supports the Department’s commitment to safeguarding, improving health outcomes, and ensuring coordinated care for individuals and families across the community.

The Role

Provide expert clinical and forensic care for adults affected by sexual assault and family violence, including forensic examinations, evidence collection, medico-legal reporting, court testimony, and support for paediatric assessments. Lead clinical governance, policy development, statewide reporting,



and continuous quality improvement to ensure evidence-based practice.

Build workforce capability through education and stakeholder engagement, strengthen partnerships across health, police, child protection and justice sectors, and support compliance, risk management, safeguarding, and service development to deliver high-quality forensic and support services.

You will need

• Highly developed clinical management and leadership skills, and demonstrated advanced clinical expertise in the specific area of forensic and clinical examination in accordance with best practice standards, utilising a high degree of independent decision making, with the ability to perform as an expert witness in relation to evidentiary processes within the criminal justice system.
