About the Company
Spaceflux keeps watch over space. We operate a growing global network of optical sensors that track satellites and debris in orbit, giving governments, defence and commercial customers the space-domain-awareness data they need to operate safely. Our telescopes run every clear night, from Chile to Australia to Europe – and we’re scaling fast, toward 25+ sites and new sensor types, as we grow through our next funding stage.
We’re a small, hands-on, fast-moving team where the work you do is physically real – systems you build and install end up watching the sky on the other side of the world.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Field & Installation Engineer to help us build and maintain the physical backbone of our network. You’ll install, commission, maintain and repair the sensors that make up the network – in the field around the world, and (as we set up an in-region workshop) on the bench at home.
You’ll work alongside our Sensor Development Lead, taking on real ownership of installations and hardware so the network can grow without resting on one person. It’s a varied, practical, problem-solving role for someone who’s genuinely good with their hands and enjoys making real systems work in real conditions.
You don’t need to have installed a telescope before – almost nobody has. You need to be a capable, practical engineer who’s confident with mechanisms, tools and basic electrics, happy to travel, and keen to learn. We’ll teach you the rest.
What you’ll do
- Install and commission sensors worldwide – telescopes, mounts, domes and roll-off roofs – including the site,
power and connectivity interfaces.
- Get systems working on site in real-world conditions: different power systems, customs, imperfect infrastructure, the occasional improvisation.
- Maintain, refurbish and repair the deployed estate, and provide second-line hardware support to our operations team.
- Help set up and run an in-region workshop, pre-building and testing systems so deployments become closer to plug-and-play.
- Support our systems programmes with hands-on build, test and install work.
- Help write the procedures and checklists that make installation repeatable as we scale.
What we’re looking for
- Strong, hands-on practical electro-mechanical / mechatronic engineering – genuinely good with tools, mechanisms and assemblies.
- Comfort with basic IT and networking – PCs, Ethernet, routers/switches, IP connectivity and remote-access tools
- Basic electrical competence and a willingness to learn the site/civil interfaces.
- Confidence diagnosing and fixing physical systems in the field, with limited information and improvised conditions.
- Willingness to travel internationally, including the occasional multi-week trip – this is central to the role.
- Practical, self-reliant,
methodical; calm on site and clear in communication.
- Fluent English.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with telescopes, mounts, optics, cameras, observatory domes/roofs, or embedded controllers – a premio, not a requirement.
- Experience in a workshop / integration / pre-staging environment.
- Comfort with shipping, customs and field logistics.
- Italian speaker (our sensor team is Veneto-based; English is the working language requirement, Italian a strong plus).
The travel reality
This role involves real international travel, especially in the first period – installations take you to remote sites around the world, sometimes for a couple of weeks at a time. We’re deliberately building a workshop and a team so that travel becomes more manageable over time, but if you don’t want to travel, this isn’t the role for you. If you like the idea of your work taking you to a mountaintop observatory now and then, you’ll love it.
What we offer A pivotal, hands-on role in a mission-driven space company at a real inflection point.
- Genuine ownership and visible, physical impact – you build it, you install it, it works.
- The chance to grow with the network, from doing installations to helping design how they’re done, including a new in-region workshop.
Based in Italy, employed through Spaceflux Italia, with competitive compensation commensurate with experience. Spaceflux is an equal-opportunity employer. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to building an inclusive team.
