Software Engineer – Space

Location: Remote, United States

Employment: Full-time

Compensation: $120,000–$150,000 base salary - some flexibility for the right candidate

Travel: Minimal, approximately 0–10%

The Opportunity Join a small, developer-first aerospace engineering company supporting commercial, government, defense and U.S. Space Force programs.

You will initially support an active government space program, taking ownership of a meaningful portion of its operational software. The work is approximately 70% backend and 30% frontend, with opportunities to contribute across additional customer programs and internal products over time.

This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys working across architecture, development, integration, deployment and production support.

What You’ll Do

- Build and maintain operational software for space and defense programs.
- Develop backend services and APIs using Python, C#, Java or similar languages.
- Create REST APIs, data-processing workflows and customer-facing web applications.
- Work with spacecraft, ground-system, telemetry, mission-simulation or related aerospace data.
- Deploy and maintain containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Support secure CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and production monitoring.
- Troubleshoot software across development, test and deployed customer environments.
- Collaborate with aerospace engineers, program leaders, customers and prime contractors.
- Help translate customer requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Take increasing ownership and become a technical subject-matter expert for assigned programs.
- Contribute to internal products and additional customer projects as priorities evolve.

Required Experience

- Five or more years of professional software engineering experience.
- Professional experience building production applications—not only scripts or test automation.
- Strong backend development experience, ideally using Python.
- Experience designing and integrating REST APIs.

- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience owning software through design, development, testing and deployment.
- Background supporting aerospace, spacecraft, ground systems, mission operations, modeling and simulation, or another closely related technical environment.
- Experience working independently within a small, collaborative engineering team.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Eligibility and willingness to obtain a security clearance up to TS/SCI.

Nice to Have

- Professional C#, Java, C++ or Rust experience.
- Spacecraft telemetry, commanding or TT&C; experience.
- Ground-segment or mission-control software development.
- Experience supporting active missions or operational users.
- STK, ODTK, orbital analysis or mission-planning experience.
- Kafka or other distributed/event-driven technologies.
- AWS or other cloud infrastructure experience.
- Terraform, Ansible or infrastructure-as-code experience.
- Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps or similar CI/CD platforms.
- React, Angular, TypeScript or JavaScript experience.
- Secure software development, container hardening or DevSecOps experience.
- Experience deploying software to government, classified or air-gapped environments.
- Active security clearance.

Why Join

- Work directly on meaningful government and Space Force programs.
- Own substantial portions of the software instead of one narrow component.
- Join a small team where engineers have visibility and direct influence.
- Remain hands-on across the complete software lifecycle.
- Work remotely from anywhere in the United States.
- Gain exposure to multiple missions, customers and technical challenges.
- Collaborate closely with experienced aerospace and software leaders.

Benefits

- Medical, dental and vision insurance.
- Employer-supported health savings account.
- 401(k) with company match.
- 15 days of paid time off.
- 10 company holidays plus two floating holidays.
- Monthly internet and phone reimbursement.
- Life insurance and employee assistance benefits.
