Offer Description
Title of the project: “Landed Wealth, Loans to Agriculturists and Exchange Rates in Genoa between the Twelfth and the Thirteenth Centuries” - The Genoese archives house the earliest collection of notarial registers of Latin Europe, which constitute an invaluable source for the economic history of the medieval Mediterranean. However,
the prevailing interest in Genoese international trade has shadowed the study of rural economy and of small-scale moneylending from citizens to rural dwellers – two research avenues that deserve further investigation. It should also be emphasised that the Genoese commune was perhaps the first to be granted the right to mint its own coin (in 1138). Moreover, some Genoese coins provide the earliest examples (in the 1140s) of overstriking, that is, the use of old denarii in the place of planchets..Omissis.
