AI Engineer – OCR & Intelligent Document Processing

Rome, Italy | €80,000–€90,000 gross per annum | Permanent, Full-Time

Help us solve one of the most challenging problems in financial document automation.

We are looking for an experienced AI Engineer with strong hands-on OCR expertise to help design, build and deliver intelligent document-processing technology for a global enterprise SaaS business.

The challenge is significant: processing complex, inconsistent and often highly detailed invoices, extracting accurate financial information and transforming documents into reliable, structured data.

We need someone who understands how to turn AI and OCR technology into dependable, production-ready software.

If you have spent at least three years professionally developing AI/ML solutions, have genuine OCR experience and enjoy solving difficult engineering problems, we'd love to hear from you.

The engineering challenge

You will play a key role in developing an intelligent invoice-processing application capable of handling documents with different layouts, formats, languages and levels of complexity.

The solution must go beyond simply reading text. It needs to recognise, interpret, extract and validate critical financial information accurately.

You will help:

- Design and build AI-powered OCR and Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) solutions.
- Develop document understanding, classification and data-extraction pipelines for complex invoices.
- Extract and validate invoice headers, line items, financial values, tax details and other structured information.
- Improve extraction accuracy, confidence scoring and exception handling across inconsistent document formats.
- Evaluate and integrate OCR,



Machine Learning and LLM technologies where they deliver measurable improvements.
- Take solutions from development through testing, deployment and continuous improvement within enterprise SaaS applications.

What we're looking for

Essential experience

- Minimum three years of professional, hands-on AI/Machine Learning engineering experience.
- Strong commercial OCR or Intelligent Document Processing experience, including building or significantly improving real-world document-extraction solutions.
- Experience with technologies such as Azure AI Document Intelligence, Azure AI Services, AWS Textract, Google Document AI, Tesseract or equivalent.
- Strong Python development skills and experience building AI-powered applications and APIs.
- Experience measuring and improving model accuracy, extraction quality and production performance.
- Ability to understand complex business requirements and translate them into reliable technical solutions.

You should be comfortable taking technical ownership, evaluating different approaches and explaining why a particular solution will work in a commercial environment.

Experience that would really stand out

- OCR or AI development involving invoices, financial documents, purchase orders or other complex transactional records.
- Experience extracting complex tables, line items and structured financial data.




- Knowledge of document layout analysis, computer vision or custom-trained extraction models.
- Experience integrating LLMs into document-processing workflows.
- Experience working with Azure cloud services and production SaaS platforms.

A degree or Master's in AI, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science or a related technical discipline is desirable. Equivalent substantial industry experience will also be considered.
